The region has six Health and Social Services Centers (CSSS) affiliated to the Réseau Universitaire Intégré de Santé (RUIS) McGill (integrated university health network). In addition to these institutions with state-of-the-art and high-performance equipment, there are many clinics, such as a health co-operative in Témiscamingue. The whole region also benefits from a model for chronic disease case management and follow-up. And it’s through the network’s focused efforts that the number of physicians is on the rise.
The strength of the regional health network resides, among others, in its will to offer basic services to the population and, above all, on its ability to innovate. This is especially demonstrated by the integration of the role of nurse practitioners, the introduction of the Toyota method in surgery management in Val-d’Or, the implementation in Abitibi-Ouest businesses of the Jocoeur Project which aims to prevent cardiovascular diseases and the development of telemedicine in order to accelerate diagnoses. Social health is also on board and services all types of clientele. In this regard, it’s important to recognise the excellent work carried out by street, hall and community workers.
Finally, health is a community affair in Abitibi-Témiscamingue more than elsewhere, as attested by the many communities who subscribe to the Québec Network of Healthy Cities and Villages, including one of its first members, the city of Rouyn-Noranda.
