EDUCATION

Jules Arsenault, humanist and rector of the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue from 1989 to 2004, said that education was freedom. If such is the case, the people of Abitibi-Témiscamingue must be free in a big way, judging by all of the learning and development opportunities available to them!

Abitibi-Témiscamingue has six school boards, five of which are Francophone, and one, Anglophone: they offer specialised programs ranging from the arts and sport/study programs to the Bruntland Green Schools and an international program. The vocational sector is not left behind: with its concerted regional approach, the employment rate borders on 100 %! A wide range of postsecondary training is also offered to workers who wish to improve their skills, either in information technologies, management, writing or mechanics.

College and university education is available in all MRC’s, and some fields of study are often exclusive to the region. Just think of the Cégep technical programs in pre-hospital emergency care, industrial electronics, early childhood education or industrial maintenance mechanics, or of UQAT’s programs in mineral engineering, interactive multimedia authoring, journalism or accounting sciences. Furthermore, the University is brilliantly breaking new ground with the First Nations Pavilion, which will offer higher education to Aboriginal people from all over Quebec and Eastern Canada.

We have such an unquenchable thirst to learn more about our territory that renowned research chairs are studying ways to protect and promote it, especially in matters of forestry, agri-food, mining engineering, underground telecommunications, development of wood products and water resources. Because freedom also means understanding the world around us, managing it astutely and sharing it with our contemporaries as well as with future generations.
